Useful information for conference registrants
In July, the average high temperature in Basel is 26°C / 79°F, and the average low is 14°C / 56°F. The weather is usually sunny with some rainy days. Summer 2018 was very hot. The Parliament of Basel declared a Climate Emergency in February 2019 and is adapting policies accordingly.

The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF, or Fr.). In many shops Euros (€) are accepted as well, and so are credit cards. However, Swiss Francs are the currency that will be most useful for every day expenses. Currently (14 June 2019), 1.00 CHF is 1.00 USD or 0.89 €.
At restaurants and in taxis, a gratuity is included in the bill, but you are welcome to round up by a franc or two.
Most foreign visitors to Switzerland whose stay does not exceed 90 days, can enter the country without a visa. Read this information about visa issues and entry requirements.

In Switzerland the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. Power sockets are different from those in other European countries: Plugs and sockets are of type J, so foreign visitors usually need a power plug adapter (e.g. this one for U.S. plugs), and Americans also need a voltage converter.

The inhabitants of Basel speak German (Swiss German). Most speak English and French as well.
